Carl Van Vechten's supposedly sophisticated downtown friends had seen it coming for quite some time. Perhaps their so-called social graces stopped them ever so short of calling it as they actually saw it. Certainly they were relieved when Miguel Covarrubias, the famed Mexican caricaturist, came forth and boldly proclaimed it as he also saw it.
Carl's more primitive uptown neighbors may have had a few more choice, unprintable epithets but for the most part, they probably just laughed and said it was Wishful Thinking!
