Almost every black same-gender identified or old vintage black Hollywood-lovin' blogger has a Nina Mae McKinney post on his or her blog. I first did mine back in 2008 when I first started out as a blogger, and it remains one of my most popular posts (NINA MAE MCKINNEY: A BLACK DECO FILM GODDESS!). I'm doing this one because I wanted an excuse to use the two McKinney photos (above) that I've collected along the way, and because I'm trying to channel another much sought after Nina shot to come my way.
Some years ago, I once saw a rare photo of Nina Mae McKinney on Ebay. I had never seen it before and I haven't seen it since. The bidding started at big money and at the time I couldn't think about competing. But it was an early shot of McKinney sitting before a a makeup mirror getting her face beat by a Hollywood makeup artist. If I'm not mistaken, there was a large Kleig light shining on her face. I can't find any record of George Hurrell ever photographing Miss McKinney but it sure was a glamorous shot.
So, I'm wondering if the winning bidder is the only one with a copy? Calling all McKinney devotees, bloggers, drive by visitors, and to the Universe - if you know the photo I'm talking about and want to share it, know where I can find it or even if you want to tease me - LEAVE A COMMENT!
May 12: Two different readers just sent me these today. I think they're most interesting and they look to have been shot at the same session or by the same photographer. I've seen them before and they're really quite unusual. I think they were done in London in the early 30's. Thanks Joseph and Mychaeltodd!
May 13: These last two were added today. I found them myself and they are quite serious. Wouldn't you agree? I was going to sit on them but I couldn't resist! They were obviously taken in the early 1940's.
KEEP THEM COMING.
